Bangladesh’s second-largest city
Chittagong will soon have Teletalk 3G services, while Sylhet can expect the
state-owned mobile company’s third-generation services by May.
Teletalk Managing Director Mujibur Rahman told bdnews24.com that 3G services were already being provided in Chittagong on a limited scale. “The high-speed internet services will be officially inaugurated this month.”
3G SIMs are being sold at two customer care centres in the port city and also through authorised dealers.
Mujibur Rahman said over 100 3G-enabled base transceiver systems (BTS) have been installed in Chittagong and citizens in the metropolitan area will be the first to enjoy the services in the area.
The state-owned company launched the country’s first 3G services in the capital on Oct 14.
The Teletalk MD also said the company now had more than 200,000 users in capital Dhaka and its surroundings areas alone.
Teletalk has almost 1.6 million users, according to the data of regulatory body Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
3G technology allows fast data transfer enabling its users to view television on their phones and hold video conferences. The high-speed internet can also provide geographic directions by using the Global Positioning System (GPS).
