Foreshocks predict earthquakes!

After a destructive earthquake, scientists sifting through the rumbles that preceded the big event often find foreshocks.
Foreshocks are smaller temblors that strike in the days and hours before a moderate-to-large earthquake. They’re puzzling. Not all earthquakes have foreshocks, and despite decades of effort, no one has successfully found a way to predict earthquakes using foreshocks.

New radiation ring around earth

High above Earth’s surface float two rings of energetic charged particles, and for about four weeks in September, they were joined by a third. The temporary ring may have formed in response to a solar shock wave that passed by Earth, researchers report online February 28 in Science.
The discovery could force scientists to revisit decades of ideas about the structure of the Van

When Earth was snowball

For decades, scientists have intended that the earth may once have been a “Snowball Earth,” and new research proposes oceans could have churned beneath an ice-covered Earth, possibly assisting to provide life with vital nutrients. When ice possibly swathed the entire world, the oceans underneath may have nevertheless surprisingly churned, potentially helping to provide life with vital nutrients, new research suggests.
For decades, scientists have proposed that the planet may once have been a “Snowball Earth,” with geological evidence suggesting ice reached all the way to the equator at least twice during the Neoproterozoic era (about 635 million to 750 million years ago)

Scientists claim new glasses-free 3D for cellphone

Fancy watching a movie on your mobile phone, where figures leap out from the screen in 3D, rather as Princess Leia did in that scene from “Star Wars”?
That’s the claim made by US researchers, who on Wednesday reported they had made a display which gives a three-dimensional image that can be viewed without special glasses and is intended for cellphones, tablets and watches.
Unlike the holographic projection used in George Lucas’ movie fantasy, their small prototype display is flat and backlit.
It uses a technology called diffractive optics to give 3D images that can be viewed from multiple angles, even if the device is tilted.

Prospect of Martian life?

If a microorganism were found on Mars, would anyone care?
NASA scientists announced on March 12 that the Red Planet could have supported ancient life  though they don’t yet have evidence that it did. A sample of rock drilled by the Curiosity rover revealed conditions that could have supported ancient microbes at some point in the distant past.
The news of even potential life made headlines, and there’s no doubt the discovery of actual microbial life on Mars would, too. But the impact of finding

Earthquakes with Midas touch

The tyrannosaur of the minerals, this gold nugget in quartz weighs more than 70 ounces (2 kilograms).

Water in faults vaporizes during an earthquake, depositing gold, according to a model published in the March 17 issue of the journal Nature Geoscience. The model provides a quantitative mechanism for the link between gold and quartz seen in many of the world’s gold deposits, said Dion Weatherley, a geophysicist at the University of Queensland in Australia and lead author of the study.
When an earthquake strikes, it moves along a rupture in the ground

This year’s generation of Android phones show a lot of promise, but the big challenge now for phone manufacturers is to produce the true jaw-dropper that deviates from the classic candy-bar design. It may not happen in 2013, but it’s safe to say that Android phones are hitting their stride and even more great design is on the horizon.
While the bulk of the CES 2013 announcements were mainly focused on bigger and better Ultra HD televisions, we believe that full-HD smartphones will be the next big thing.
